Which Fitness Certification Should I Get?

Before teaching group fitness, start with credible education or certification for the type of class you want to lead. Your certification should give you a foundation in movement, anatomy, safety, modifications, programming, and responsible instruction. Here’s a simple guide to help you choose:

If You Want to Teach Mat Pilates

Choose a Mat Pilates certification to teach Mat Pilates or Pilates-inspired classes.

These programs typically focus on Pilates principles, alignment, anatomy, movement mechanics, modifications, sequencing, and teaching methodology.

  • Format: Many offer online, self-paced options and live workshops

  • Time: Typically completed within a few weeks or through weekend workshops

  • Cost: Varies by program, but can be $400–$1,000

If You Want to Teach Sculpt or Strength

Choose a Group Fitness certification if you plan to teach Sculpt, Strength, Strength Fusion, conditioning, circuit training, or other full-body group fitness classes. These certifications provide a broader foundation in exercise science, movement selection, class programming, modifications, cueing, safety, and leading groups.

  • Format: Most are online and self-paced

  • Time: Typically completed within a few weeks

  • Cost: Varies by program, but can be $300-700

What If You Want to Teach Both?

If you want to teach Mat Pilates and Sculpt/Strength, consider completing both types of education.

A Mat Pilates certification gives you deeper Pilates-specific knowledge, while a Group Fitness certification gives you a broader foundation for strength, conditioning, and mixed-modality classes.
